The city of Amsterdam needs a reliable transport and mobility system to foster economic growth, but at the same time transport is causing congestion, pollution, and accidents. Maarten Jan Roosmale Nepveu from TU Delft looked at implementing urban waterway transport as a sustainable freight transport solution in Amsterdam (NL).
A new paper envisions a multimodal passenger-and-parcel sharing (PPS) network for urban logistics integrating metro, taxi, and truck. A hub-and-spoke structure is designed including hubs located at metro stations and service stores connected to the hubs.
Growing last-mile delivery costs and changing customer demands are making companies to look at click-and-collect, locker boxes, on-demand, and autonomous solutions. Global urban logistics spending is expected to reach US$ 5.9 trillion in 2020, with transportation accounting for the majority at 70%.
Together with their suppliers and logistics service providers, the Dutch Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS) and the University of Amsterdam (UvA) have worked five years on sustainable deliveries to their campuses.
