Maersk improves last-mile parcel deliveries with AI

At Deliver Europe in Amsterdam, Maersk’s Head of E-commerce, Thiago Paiva, shared how the company uses AI to optimize last-mile parcel delivery through partner carriers. With last-mile costs accounting for up to 40% of total logistics expenses, Maersk views this as a key area for enhancing performance and improving customer experience.

AI helps Maersk manage a complex, multi-carrier delivery network by improving partner selection, performance tracking, and cost control. A primary goal is to set accurate delivery expectations for customers, which depends on reliable data. Inaccurate estimates, Paiva warned, can erode trust more than delays themselves.

Coordinating a wide range of carriers remains difficult due to differing service levels, pricing models, and inconsistent data systems. Scaling across geographies while maintaining service quality adds further complexity. Maersk’s logistics flows—from warehouses via air or road to sorting centers and final-mile delivery—are orchestrated using AI to enhance efficiency, reduce friction, and support growing e-commerce operations.

This session explores how Maersk is:

  • Using AI to model real-time parcel routing
  • Reducing SLA variance and delivery cost per parcel
  • Optimizing multicarrier networks across Europe and the US.
