Autonomous delivery robot meets tram in Karlsruhe (D)

As part of the EU-funded URBANE project, a demonstration was done on March 6, 2025, at the Phillipp-Reis-Straße tram stop in Karlsruhe. The research initiative explored innovative approaches for sustainable and efficient parcel delivery, specifically by integrating tram services with an autonomous delivery robot. URBANE stands for Upscaling Innovative Green Urban Logistics Solutions Through Multi-Actor Collaboration and Physical Internet (PI) Inspired Last Mile Deliveries.

The demonstration tested how parcels could be transported from point A to point B using a standard tram and a self-driving delivery robot. This fusion of existing public transport infrastructure with cutting-edge technology opens up new possibilities for eco-friendly and flexible logistics in urban areas. During the one-day trial, researchers focused on how the delivery robot could autonomously enter and exit a tram at the stop.

While this method of loading and unloading delivery robots onto trams is not yet ready for regular operation, key legal and technical questions are being addressed in ongoing research. The next development phase will be explored through the regioKArgoTramTrain project, which is set to launch as a real-world testbed in 2027.

Citizen Participation as a Key to Success
Alongside the demonstration, a survey was conducted with invited participants to gather public opinions on this form of autonomous parcel delivery. The aim was to understand the views of different user groups and evaluate the general acceptance of new technologies in daily life. These insights will provide a valuable foundation for future research and development.

Karlsruhe as a Hub of Innovation
The URBANE project aims to scale up innovative, sustainable logistics solutions through interdisciplinary collaboration. The demonstration in Karlsruhe showcased the potential of such concepts and underlined the city’s role as a leading center for research and technology. With projects like URBANE, Karlsruhe is reinforcing its position as a European innovation hub.

The Karlsruhe-based URBANE team includes a strong regional network: the Automotive Engineering Network e.V. (aen), SEW-EURODRIVE GmbH & Co KG, the City of Karlsruhe’s Economic Development department, and subcontractors Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft mbH (AVG) and TransportTechnologie-Consult Karlsruhe GmbH (TTK).

Looking Ahead: Shaping the Future of Urban Logistics
This successful test marks a significant step toward greener, more efficient urban logistics. At the same time, it highlights the challenges that lie ahead—from regulatory hurdles to public acceptance of autonomous technologies.

With projects like URBANE and regioKArgoTramTrain, Karlsruhe is leading in shaping sustainable mobility and logistics solutions, actively contributing to making future cities more livable and environmentally friendly.
