Exploring the role of urban nodes in sustainable mobility: the IMPACTS Conference

Sustainability is becoming an increasingly central focus in urban mobility and transport planning. In addition to responding to the impacts of climate change, European cities and regions are now also required to align with evolving policy frameworks, such as the revised TEN-T regulation and the broader goals of the European Green Deal.

These developments were the focus of the recent IMPACTS conference, held under the theme “The New European TEN-T Regulation on Urban Nodes: Challenges for Cities and Regions on Sustainable Mobility and Clean, Intelligent Transport Solutions.” The event offered an opportunity for local governments, planners, and mobility experts to exchange ideas and strategies for adapting transport systems in line with both climate targets and regulatory expectations.

Key topics discussed across keynotes, sessions, and panels included:

  • How the revised TEN-T regulation, the Green Deal, and Climate City Contracts shape new responsibilities for urban nodes and metropolitan areas;
  • The implications of climate neutrality targets for Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMP) and innovation strategies;
  • The social and political dimensions of implementing change—especially in gaining public support for sustainable mobility measures;
  • Lessons from best practices within the IMPACTS network on urban nodes and mobility hubs for both passenger and freight transport.

As urban mobility continues to evolve, such forums play a valuable role in understanding both the practical and policy dimensions of transformation. Explore the various presentations on city logistics hubs from Amsterdam, Vienna, Gothenburg, Zurich, Barcelona, Rome, and Berlin.
