Urban freight has become a core issue in urban planning. Cities struggle with congestion, emissions, safety and energy use, while carriers face pressure to deliver more service at lower cost. The proceedings, edited by Eiichi Taniguchi and Russell Thompson, review how city logistics schemes — consolidation centers, off-hour delivery, time windows, access regulation, road pricing and freight demand management — actually perform in practice, and which modeling, evaluation and planning tools are needed before deployment.
Several themes stand out. Digitalization runs throughout: ICT and ITS for data collection, public-private data sharing, IoT, the Physical Internet and digital twins that connect traffic simulation with real multimodal operations. A second cluster covers governance: public-private partnerships, cost-benefit analysis of e-commerce distribution, and legal, organizational, and financial frameworks. The frontier topics are well represented too: AI and big data analytics, robots and drones for the last mile, crowd logistics, zero-emission delivery, electric and autonomous vehicles, cargo bikes, and even quantum computing for large-scale network models. Reverse logistics, waste management and public health complete the picture.
