The sound of the city: silencing the noise in Amsterdam (NL)

It is Amsterdam’s ambition to maintain a level of at least 5.000 newly built houses each year. For this purpose the city is looking for suitable areas for residential building and is transforming existing business areas into metropolitan live-work areas.

These are often located near busy highways, railways or existing industrial areas. Therefore, traffic or industrial noise is one of the important issues with the development of new live-work areas. One of Amsterdam’s ambitions in to move to electric mobility to lower noise levels.

In what different ways is Amsterdam able to reduce noise disturbance? Amsterdam describes the possibilities of reducing noise at building level, at the level of the sources of noise, and reducing the transmission of noise. Creative solutions mean that residential construction is possible at noise-prone locations and can raise the residential quality and quality of living.
